Running Header: TEAM ROLE TEST1As a team we have all completed the team role test found at www.123test.com. There testhas selected nine different team roles and those roles are; the Executive, Explorer, Innovator,Team Role Test2Analyst, Driver, Chairman, Completer, Team player, and Expert. A total of 100 points aredivided over the various roles. Each group role can have up to 25 points. The graphs belowindicate how each team member’s roles fit each person. After each graph, team members haveexplained how their results contribute to and/or reduce team effectiveness.Michael’s Role Test PortionAs a male aged 29, the roles assigned to me in the team include being a driver, innovator, chairman, executive, expert, team player, completer, and analyst. As the driver, I’m expected tobe very ambitious. One of the key characteristics of drivers is being time conscious. Though thisis interpreted by other employees as being impatient and harassing, it helps in putting the teammembers on focus in the course of success. As an innovator I’m responsible for the creation andTeam Role Test3incubation of new ideas in the team. Innovators are characterized by the desire for independence, scientific reasoning, strong imagination and being original. The tactical ways in which the teamapproaches and solves problems rests upon innovators. The chairman of the team gives direction and sense of coordination to the team members. He is also the unifying force in the team. The chairman should deal with members in a respectfuland a fair way so that members can feel motivated. The explorers’ role in a team is to investigateissues, show interest and curiosity about things. They are generally cheerful, extroverts in natureand gregarious. They improvise and communicate with other team member’s ideas in addition todeveloping new contacts. Executive’s role, on the other hand, is to have the job done. He or sheis very eager, efficient and practical in work execution. They are very organized and areresponsible for realization of practical results out of ideas. An expert team member has the skills, knowledge, and expertise in doing a certain job. They are very committed to their course of work and gets defensive when someone gets in theirway. They like to work alone. Additionally, completers have a controlling nature and becomenervous when they sense commission of errors in the job. They feel responsible for the team’sachievements and are used at the end of the task to polish and finish up the job and lastly, analysts are generally reserved and critical and will rationally and reasonably react to the team’splans. He or she supports expedient ideas and evaluates every proposal for accuracy beforeaccepting it.Jamie’s Role Test PortionTeam Role Test4The Team Role Test results indicate that I am geared more toward the roles of teamplayer, executive, innovator, and completer. The team player role searches for cohesion on theteam’s behalf. They offer support where it is needed and help others to keep an open-mind whenconsidering everyone’s perspective. These characteristics come in handy when issues arise as theteam player aids in creating a harmonious environment. The weakness of this role is the tendencyto avoid conflict and commit to a position. This keeps the team from moving past the conflicttoward their goal. The executive is described as someone who gets things done. These members aredisciplined and systematic with work tasks. Executives aid the team in completing the sharedgoal. The downside of this role could be that they are so eager to complete there job that they areresistant to making changes to the approach or goal. An innovator finds the best approach forsolving problems, which is beneficial for the team when they are faced with difficult tasks. TheTeam Role Test5downside to this role is that their strong viewpoint can be off-putting to others and cause conflict.Lastly, the completer is detail oriented and ensures that projects are completed thoroughly. Theneed for control brings on anxiety with this role, which hinders the completer from benefittingthe team.Harvard professor Linda A. Hill and co-author Kent Lineback (2013) suggest, “collectivework and mutual commitment, in addition to cooperation and coordination, allow teams tosucceed†(as cited in Hiriyappa, 2013). It is important for members to recognize their strengths,as it adds value to the team and aids in achieving the shared objectives. It is difficult to chooseone description that best defines my role within the team because each of us has had to adopt avariety of roles depending on the project. I hope that I represented each of the roles when thecompetency was needed and served the most impact for my team. However, I believe that theTeam Roles Test results accurately assessed the majority of my roles as a team player, executive, innovator, and completer.Team Role Test6Maggie’s Role Test PortionThe role test indicates that I am a strong innovator and executive, average for being a team andexpert, and am less geared towards completing or analyzing. I feel that these assessments are anaccurate reflection of my personality and strengths. An innovator is someone who finds the best way to do something and an executive issomeone who gets something done. This combination is a good representation of how I like tosolve challenges. I ask myself what I want the outcome to look like and then build a path andaction items that will get me to the end result. I like breaking big projects into manageable tasks- which is indicative of my strong innovative personality. My executive personality is presentTeam Role Test7when I delegate tasks and expect them to be completed. The combination of these twopersonality types can be a great strength, but it must be coupled with strong emotionalintelligence (EI). While EI has many definitions, it can be simply stated as “the ability tomonitor one’s own and other people’s emotions†(Srivastava, 2013). I must be aware of my teammembers’ emotions as to cause harm to any relationships. By assigning tasks based on otherpeople’s’ skills and acknowledging their strengths, I can build a team environment that issupportive, collaborative, and productive.I am found it interesting that I scored so low on the completer role. It makes sense thatthis was my weakest skill as I find it tedious and boring to polish and scrutinize projects at theend of the deadline. I work better at the beginning of a project where I can influence what theend result will look like. But, other aspects of the completer, such as worrying that other peoplewill think me controlling, are present. It is the team player in me that balances this worry. I wantto promote harmony and avoid conflicts so I will phrase my edits in a diplomatic way.The key learning point I take out of this activity is that each person is a combination of allthe personality types. None of my team members were overwhelmingly one trait; we all were aneven blend of many. While we have natural inclinations, each individual has many differentskills they can bring to the table. In addition, we can balance our weaknesses with our strengths.Team Role Test8TeNita’s Role Test PortionAfter taking the roles test, I can agree with the results. It was interesting how I expectedto score a little higher in certain areas; the realization is that my overall role has balance. I am a47-year-old female who has worked for many years as a team player. I discovered that workingon teams made me more comfortable with sharing my weaknesses, and I have learned a greatdeal from a diverse group of people. The results of the team role test states that the team player is caring, avoids conflicts, andfosters harmony. Being someone who likes to help other people, the team player is generallyTeam Role Test9considered agreeable and friendly. He or she is diplomatic and emphasizes solidarity and teamcohesion. This explanation is absolutely true about my character and position in life. I havealways been the type to help others because I understand what it feels like to walk into a newenvironment and feel unwelcomed. Most of this tension will happen through nonverbalcommunication because of how past team experiences involved a huge lack of diversity.Being a team player and an explorer has contributed to the effectiveness of teams I havebeen a part of. For this reason, I enter environments with an open mind and ready to learn frompersons who are different from me. Furthermore, a team player will respect and embrace bothsimilarities and differences that all members possess without being judgmental. From a point offlexibility, a team player will understand and value what each person brings to the group. Finally, as a team player, I am consistent with holding myself accountable in making sure myteam produces a successful project. What was the most interesting; yet, true was the percentage I received as a driver. I haveoften known myself to be a driver and very ambitious person because of how passionate I amabout certain projects. The key word here being certain. I now understand that I have the abilityto take the driver’s seat when I don’t feel intimated by the skills and expertise of others. As aresult of the roles test, I would agree that I don’t present myself as a driver when attempting torespect and embrace the ideas of others.Team Role Test10Dwoynne’s Roles test portionAfter taking the team roles test, it shows that I am a team player as well as an innovatorand driver. When you are a team player, you are responsible for helping out the team in allaspects. Being a team player you want to make sure that you cut down on conflict and try tohelp out with team responsibilities and make sure that you are doing your part as a team player. Ihave always been considered a flexible team leader, willing to do something for someone else forTeam Role Test11the better of the team; to see team being scored the highest in my test score results was notshocking for me.Being an innovator can be defined as being someone who can introduce new ideas andnew ways of doing things to the group. I feel that I have done this in groups that I have been onbefore in the past. Mostly on projects that I am very passionate about, I will step up and come upwith new ideas and different ways to complete the tasks at hand. It is stated that innovators liketo work independently, and not to work on teams. This I can agree to with certain projects forexample if it’s a creative design or an artsy craft I do not like working on teams to get my projectdone, because I know how I like things done and I may change my mind several times whileworking on the project.Being a driver was another area that I scored high on. Being a driver is someone that isvery ambitious and energetic, and can come off as being impatient as well. This is another traitthat I agree with for myself personally, but again this is something that I portray when it involvessomething that I am extremely passionate about. Overall I think this role test was a greatexercise and was pretty much accurate for me. I know for sure that I am a team player and that Iwill always try and make sure that I am doing something that will make it easier for the peoplethat I am working with.Team Role Test12ReferencesHiriyappa, B.
