Project Management – One Page Project Overview (OPPO) and Presentation
Question:
1. Each team is adopting the role as Project Manager for the client. That is, you are the project manager for the Koala City Council.
2. Review the Koala City Corporate Plan (available in the subject Learn JCU assessment folder). Each of the four (4) key Goal areas, Economic, Environment, Community, Governance, strategies are outlined. Review each of the Goal areas and strategies and select one strategy area that represents your interest (discipline) from which you are to build an OPPO and then develop a full project plan in assessment two. Be careful as many of the strategies are written as initiatives and appear to have weak or no result or outcome. Therefore, you will be critically considering the strategies and developing a project to meet the outcomes/results of the intended strategy.
3. Consider your chosen strategy (only one) and ask WHY are we bothering to do this? You can begin to develop a clear sense of what the result could be for the strategy.
4. For example, a strategy might be: ‘build a network of priority bus corridors’. Asking why, could result in the following possible results:
(1) Commuters get to and from work more quickly,
(2) Traffic flows faster during d=peak periods, and (3) people choose public transport instead of driving.
5. Once you have a clear sense of the outcome (result) required from the strategy, you can now begin to develop a project suitable to deliver the strategy. The project then needs to be aligned with the corporate plan and delivers a ‘real’ result/outcome. This will lead to a result based project leading to a successful project outcome. In other words, the project will be linked to a valuable outcome.
6. So, you ask, what is a One Page Project Overview (OPPO)? The idea here is to teach you a way of keeping things simple and focused in terms of conceptualising your teams proposed project. Using the material from the first five (5) weeks, each project team will create a create a One Page Project Overview in the format of an A3 (or bigger) sized poster and present the poster in a project team meeting setting. All OPPO’s will be placed on the wall for all teams in that tutorial to view. Each OPPO presentation is be supported by a brief PowerPoint presentation consisting of 2-3 slides. Presentations will be between 5-10 minutes depending on the number of groups ineach tutorial. The exact timing will be advised prior to week 6.
7. The OPPO is to include the following:
a. Justification for selecting the project – why project is a ‘must do’b. Project Charterc. Stakeholder Analysis and outline communication pland. Preliminary project scopee. Further details will be provided in class.
