module 1ll of us as individuals have values that we live by. We learn these values from our environment: our families, schools, religious institutions, and other organizations that have meaning for us. Organizations have values as well, and the best of these come out of interaction with the organization’s environment and reflect how the organization aspires interact with the community, its customers, or other key constituencies. In this first discussion, we will take a look at our individual values and those of Trident University, and see how our personal values support or conflict with those of the institution. We will do this in two separate steps. In the first week we will identify our key values and their sources, and in the second week we will discuss values congruency between ourselves and Trident, and also between Trident and its environment. The exercise is adapted from AAPIP NGEC Organizational Fellowship Program .aapip.org/”>www.aapip.org .org/”>http://genderandequity.org/Week 1 task:Take 20 minutes and make a list of your own working values as an individual and choose the top three. Post the top three to the discussion and reflect on what influenced you to adopt those values. Now, take another 20 minutes and identify and post three values that you think are held by Trident University. How did you determine that these were the institution’s values? You may use your own experience with the University, the University’s website, its Facebook page, or any other source that you feel exemplifies Trident’s values as an institution. Specify what source(s) you used.Note: You must participate in BOTH Week 1 and Week 2 Discussions to get credit for each module’s Discussion.week 2.5em=”” 0px=”” 1em;=”” padding:=”” 0px;=”” border:=”” outline:=”” font-size:=”” 13px;=”” color:=”” rgb(53,=”” 53,=”” 53);=”” font-family:=”” ‘pt=”” sans’,=”” sans-serif;=”” background:=”” rgb(250,=”” 250,=”” 250);”=””>Week 2 task:In reading the class responses in week one, discuss the alignment of University values with your personal values and those of the broader environment. (Think of what constituencies and stakeholders interact with the University and what their interests and needs might be.) Some questions you may want to address include:What values most resonate with the way you think about your education as well as the values that best reflect the University? What University values support relationships with the institution’s key constituencies?Does the University put its values into practice? How? Where does the University fall short in terms of aligning with your personal values and those of the environment of higher education? What tensions may arise when the University values do not align with those of its environment? Are the University values uniquely American, or would they translate well into other cultures?(40 minutes)module 2week 1In managing others, human perception, attitudes and motivation are of great importance. One important OB issue spanning these dimensions is the concept of “perceived fairness” in the workplace.Fairness is such a common phenomenon in organizations that most leaders/ managers typically give it little thought. If an employee says the vacation/ leave, or other policy, isn’t fair, he or she might get some attention. But what seems fair to one person may not seem fair to another. Part of the reason for this discrepancy is that people use different rules for deciding what is fair. Collectively these rules are called “Organizational Justice†and there are 3 types of Justice:Distributive Justice – people decide what is fair based on results and outcomes that are fair to everyoneProcedural Justice – people decide what is fair based on the methods or procedures that are perceived as being fair to everyoneInteractional Justice – people decide what is fair based on the way people are treated that is seen as being fair to everyoneIn this module, we will be exploring the question of Justice through a modified role play involving a missed promotion. During week one, we will be dividing into two groups. You will be asked to read some instructions on the exercise for one or the other group. Please avoid the temptation of reading the instructions for both roles. Your ability to successfully complete the role play will be severely compromised if you do. If you are curious, you can always go back at the end of the module and read the other’s instructions! This exercise is modified from Caza, A., Caza, B.B., & Lind, E.A. (2010). The missed promotion: An exercise demonstrating the importance of organizational justice. Keep these notes, and attach them to your first post in the Discussion. (After you post, click “Edit,†and scroll down to “Attach a file.†(15 minutes)This week’s discussion will be a meeting between members of both parties. First, identify your role. Stay in your role and using the answers to the questions you prepared above, present your case to the other “side†and try to accomplish the goal you have set out in step one. You will want to return to the discussion at least twice during the week to respond to someone who is playing the other role, and see how others have responded to your arguments. Make additional points if necessary to clarify your position or further your argument. (30 minutes)Note: You must participate in BOTH Week 1 and Week 2 Discussions to get credit for each module’s Discussion.Rubricsweek 2Now read the following post-role-play reflection, jot down your answers to the questions, and fill in the table. You will attach this table to your first post as you did in week one above. (15 minutes)In the discussion this week, you will post comments responding to the following questions (30 minutes):Describe what happened when you tried to discuss the promotion with the other side, from your perspective. Was it successful? Were you more concerned with distributive, procedural or interactional justice? What attitudes or behaviors lead you to this conclusion?Do managers and employees tend to emphasize different aspects of justice? How does that influence perceptions of fairness? How can perceptions of justice affect motivation and job satisfaction (topics covered in this module)? What are the implications of what you have learned from this exercise for your future actions as a manager or a leader in your organization?Locked before Monday, January 11, 2016 12:00 AM PST
