a hostage negotiator in the public responds to a situation, the person
they are dealing with is unknown, but in prison, the subject is someone
the negotiator has most likely had some sort of contact with before.Having
some sort of knowledge on the subject is a positive and correctional
officer have some sort of amplifying information before the situation
even started.
During the selection process for negotiators, correction leaders look for personnel with good communication skills along with who has a good reputation with the staff and prisoners. When crisis situation in the correctional setting take place, the prisoner will more than likely talk to a person they know and respect, they may not have trouble believing what that staff member has to say and as they would with someone that they don’t like or trust(Moore, 2017).Another great step forward is knowing who you are dealing with behind the prison walls is the amount of information which is available on that inmate. By having quick and easy access to an inmate’s criminal and medical records, as well as having monitored their mail and phone calls, there is a great deal of information for negotiators to utilize.Correctional staff have a better understanding to deal with the inmate versus law enforcement, who don’t know who the person is or what they are dealing with. Lots of time is saved having that intelligence and with that information, they can often narrow down the causes of what has led to the situation (Etter, McCarty, Asken, 2011).
