University of South Florida Week 6 HBCP Research & Project Plan

Part 3: RESEARCH & PROJECT PLAN

Submit during Week 6

DEADLINE: June 16th

IMPORTANT: Please be sure to receive feedback on Part 1 BEFORE you begin your research and project plan (Part 3) in order to ensure that you are working with an appropriate behavior change goal.

Part 3 involves some research. Please include the following information.

  • Resource Summaries and References

Read and briefly describe 3 peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articlesthat relate to your health behavior change. Summarize what you learned from each source (one paragraph each), and put together a list of references using APA format (guidelines and sample APA style references can be found at: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/07/). You might try using PubMed, PsycINFO (both of which are accessible through our library website), and/or Google Scholar to search for articles. If you are not familiar with how to use PubMed or PsycINFO, you may request training from your campus library and/or contact your teaching assistant (TA) for additional help.

NOTE: Wikipedia, ABOUT.com, eHOW.com, and other such websites are NOT authoritative resources and should not be used as a resource. ONLY peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articles may be used for the summaries.

Here are sample titles for the peer-reviewed journals you may find useful:

For each article summary, please be sure to include the following information: (a) research question(s) addressed by the study, (b) method used to address the questions (e.g., participants, research design, and methods used), (c) summary of findings, and (d) how the findings pertain to your health behavior change project. Be sure to include at least one behavior change intervention study in your summaries.

  • Health Behavior Model/Theory
  • Project Plan

Describe your health behavior change in relation to the concepts covered in relevant health behavior theories/models (refer back to Chapter 4 that includes a description of behavior change theories/models).

  • Identify the theory/model you think will best explain the health behavior change.
  • Briefly describe the theory.
  • Explain how the concepts in the theory/model will apply to your target health behavior change.

This phase involves developing an action plan for accomplishing your goal. You will identify the behaviors and/or thoughts that will help or hinder your progress toward your goal, develop plans for posting behavior change reminders, and determine rewards for successful behavior change.

  • 3 thoughts/behaviors that will help
  • 3 thoughts/behaviors that will sabotage
  • 3 Reminders
  • 2 Rewards

Please describe three thoughts and/or behaviors that you think will help you achieve your goal. For example:

  • You could post reminders on your steering wheel of your car and/or refrigerator if your goal has to do with the buying and consuming healthy foods.
  • You could buy a pair of good walking/running shoes or gym gear if your goal has to do with exercise.
  • Even telling someone about your project helps because it becomes a public statement that holds you accountable for your behaviors.
  • You could spend 5 minutes each day visualizing yourself being successful in your goal.

Please describe three thoughts and/or behaviors that you think will sabotage your progress. For example:

  • You might try to convince yourself that you are just too busy to practice progressive muscle relaxation exercise if stress reduction is your goal.
  • You might drive past your favorite fast food site rather than pick an alternate route if your goal is to increase eating only foods prepared in your own kitchen.
  • You could sabotage any program by allowing the “little voice” in your head to tell you that you are not worthy of the change.

Any behavior change requires reminders to aid your success. Make a list of at least 3 locations where you will post your reminders or otherwise remind yourself of your behavior change goal, and decide what the reminders will say.

Any behavior change requires little rewards you give yourself to aid your success (remember positive reinforcement from Introduction to Psychology?). Describe two ways you can reward yourself for successful progress towards achieving your goal. You may give yourself a small reward for completing the behavior change week. The small reward could be as simple as a “Thinking of You” or encouragement card mailed to yourself or a game someone agrees to play with you if you are successful for a week. A larger reward could be a movie or dinner “out”, purchasing a pair of shoes, etc. However, rewards should not be saboteurs that hurt your progress. For example, do not reward yourself with junk food if you behavior change goal relates to eating healthy foods. Also do not choose rewards that are internal by nature (i.e., just feeling good, worthy, and proud because of the accomplishment). These “feel-good” factors can accompany your external awards, which will be used to celebrate your progress towards your goal.

Grading Rubric:

See below for the rubric we will use to grade your assignment. The first column is a list of the different areas you will be graded on, the second column shows the points possible for each area, and the third column is reserved for the amount of points you ultimately receive.
