The Ethnographic And Variety of Cultures Fieldwork Journey

Fieldwork Journal #1: The Ethnographic Fieldwork Journey

How Do Anthropologists Get Started Conducting Fieldwork?

You don’t need to go to a remote country to use the skills of an anthropologist; in fact, there are

different cultures all around you at this very moment. College campuses include a huge variety

of cultures, all of which can be studied by means of ethnographic fieldwork. Student

organizations such as fraternities and sororities, and religious and ethnic groups, can be

considered cultures.

1.Write a plan for conducting ethnographic fieldwork within your own community. What culture, other than your own, would you study? What topic about this culture really interests you? What strategies would you employ in your fieldwork (include at least 2, using your textbook for assistance)? What kinds of analysis would be appropriate for the data you have collected? Consider your fieldwork carefully, including what effect it might have on you and the people you are observing.

Your write up needs to include:

1.Clearly state your culture of interest

2.Clearly state your research question about your culture/topic of interest

3.What data would help you answer this question?

1.Describe the first method you would use to collect this data

2.Describe the second method you would use to collect this data

4.What kinds of analysis would be appropriate for understanding how your data helps answer your question

5.Will your research have any impact on the people you are studying?

6.What impact might your research have on you?

2. It should be approximately 1 page in length, 12point, Times New Roman font
