ISSC342 Central Texas College Backup and Restore Discussion
Hello,
I need two responses of at least 150 words each for the below students discussions for this week. Also in the bold below are the questions the students at answering.
Instructions:
1. Discuss a Backup and Restore product for either the Workstation or the Server.
2. List any observations, tips or questions about this lab that would prove helpful to fellow students prior to midnight on Wednesday and comment on other student posts with value added comments (not simply agreeing) by midnight Sunday for full credit consideration.
Student one:
BACK UP AND RESTORE
Workstations store and process most of their information locally, so that is why it is important to back up all the important files on the workstation.
A good backup and restore utility that I believe everyone is familiar with is the Windows default backup and restore.
First thing about this utility is its lack of user intervention when it comes to creating “restore points.” A restore point is simply what Microsoft calls the snapshot of the computer’s operating system and user data at any given time.
There are three different types of restore points, which are system, manual, and installation restore points. A system restore point is when the system is scheduled to create a snapshot, manual is self- explanatory, and installation is the restore point created when you install certain programs. These types of restore points are exactly why there is minimal user intervention.
Microsoft has a Backup and Restore utility imbedded inside the operating system already, so when you install the operating system you get this added feature. You obviously don’t always need to back up everything all the time, you just want to make sure to back up the important information that might cripple your company if it gets lost or stolen. You can have Windows automatically do your backups onto special hard drives if you have those set up to take information as such. This makes things a lot easier for everyone when you have an internal or external hard drive that is only used for backing up all your important information. There is a down side to that though sometimes these backup drives are targeted by hackers.

Student two:
Paragon Software is a free backup and recovery programs, or at least their website states it’s free. This edition does not support Server Operating Server. They claim to have over 6 million users, with such a large number of user, does anyone in the class use this software? You have the ability to automatically backup and restore you PC featuring disk back up, differential backups, incremental backups, flexible store and WinPE-based recovery media. They offer backups for partitions, hard disk individual documents or more of a blanket coverage, backing up you entire Windows system. I personally would do the entire windows system to have peace of mind nothing is being overlooked. From their website, you can see a small scale of what their user interface is like, and it looks pretty user friendly. Now that you know what their backup option are let us look at recovering that information.
In recovery, you have recover options; it could be the entire OS, or specific files that you can choose from drop down menus within their interface. They recommend creating an emergency rescue on and external device like another hard drive or USB stick. This is the if all else fails and windows won’t boot you can turn to this as a collateral image to create a new OS environment to work and then recovery the information stored. I have done this will the built in recovery within windows and saved it on an external device and it has been a lifesaver a few times. They do offer a premium version with more added features. Overall, this seems like a decent free way to back up and recover that I will probably give it a shot on my home computer.
I did complete lab this week already. It is in my opinion a little more lengthy than last weeks. I think some of that it a hard a hard time finding my own errors when typing out the command line information. Follow the directions and you will be able to complete the lab! Don’t skip steps or you won’t be able to see how to back up and from target 01 and target 02.
