you are a senior official at the US State Department and there are

calls in Congress for the US to “do something” about a civil war in

another country. Assume that country is located in region that is

strategically important to the United States, that there are concerns

that the civil war might spill over international borders cause regional

instability, and that the regime is nondemocratic and guilty of human

rights abuses.

(a) What are the main pros and cons for economic sanctions against

the regime and/or the armed groups that are fighting against the

regime? Name 3 pros and 3 cons.

(b) What types of sanctions would you recommend and why?
