HIST180 California State University Great Wall of Los Angeles Discussion

During the second-wave feminist movement, feminists stated “the personal is political.” While they were speaking about social issues, this discourse may have informed the creation of the Great Wall. Is the Great Wall political art? Is it feminist art? Does the work have an agenda? Think about the cultural and political atmosphere the mural was created in while you formulate your response. Think about medium as well; how are murals distinct from paintings on canvas? Does the fact that the work is a mural support or detract from the work’s message? Is the message of the mural affected by the fact that Judy Baca employed marginalized young people to help her realize it? Look to specific motifs and decades depicted within the mural, and provide examples in your discussion.
