We now know that the rigid lithosphere is broken up into plates that move on the more ductile asthenosphere. Part of the lithosphere is the outer crust and can be either ocean or continental crust. The difference between these two is related to the density of the rocks and this affects how thick they are and the difference in elevation.

In this assignment we are going to take a closer look at how and why continental and ocean crust “float” on the asthenosphere.
